For the meme, I decided to do something a little different: instead of drawing one single picture, I thought it would be fun for everyone to see a compilation of the types of pen sketches I make for all my nature landscape scenes. I know many people are very curious about the artistic process behind my paintings, so now you have the chance to see the very first step of the process. This is somewhat tweaking the rules of the pen meme a little because I formatted all my pictures together (because I draw on such large paper), but each drawing does indeed follow the meme's steadfast rule of no erasing (haha, they are drawn with a pen after all!).
So here they are! For every nature scene I paint, each one has it's humble beginnings in a sketch just like the ones above. These pen sketches are always very loose and messy, I almost always completely forgo human anatomy, and sometimes I even leave out many of the details. The reason being is that I make these sketches not for technical accuracy, but rather as a way to help me find the best composition, discover my color palette, and to help me find the 'soul' of the painting. If I can't find these three things by the end of the sketch, I start over again and try something different.
But once a pen sketch's composition starts to take on a life of it's own, and when I start seeing colors leap out at me from the black and white on the paper, that's when I stop the sketch and start my painting. And eventually, these little sketches will all turn into full-fledged paintings like these:

4. Magnolia and pine trees along a spring river
5. Fjord in the early morning light
6. Rooftop ninja with a cat waiting for the rain to stop
7. Okami fanart - Kabegami on the high cliffs overlooking the land below - pine trees and takizakura (weeping cherry tree).
There are several artists on DA that I would love to tag so I can see their amazing pen sketches, but unfortunately, I know they're super busy at this time.
